Men's vests are an inexpensive way to dress up, to be both formal and casual. The term vest derives from French veste, Italian vesta, veste "robe, gown," and Latin vestis. The sleeveless garment worn by men beneath a coat may have been first popularised by King Charles II of England, since a diary entry by Pepys (October 8, 1666) records that "[t]he King hath yesterday, in Council, declared his resolution of setting a fashion for clothes.... You may wear a vest with a long sleeve shirt and not wear a jacket or blazer for such a look. You would save money on your wardrobe and reduce maintenance effort as vests rarely need to be ironed. An economy vest you may consider is the style 4490.

Casinos and fine restaurants have long used this style for uniforms. A substantial percentage of men wear vests with a nice dress shirt and jeans.

Men wearing vests without a jacket are able to be more comfortable in warmer climates where the added jacket would cause one to sweat. There is something to be said about being more comfortable as the actual weight of garments being worn is much less. If you are in a cool or cold climate you may consider a sweater vest, such as style 921, definitely a win-win!
